  • New McLaren 720S makes its public debut in China as order bank opens ahead of start of sales in July
  • 570GT Commemorative Edition for the China market unveiled at Auto Shanghai, celebrating three years of McLaren operating in China

McLaren Automotive will celebrate three years of success in China at Auto Shanghai 2017 (19 – 28 April), with the national debut of the new McLaren 720S supercar and the unveiling of a 570GT Commemorative Edition, of which just three examples will be produced. The two cars will line up as part of the McLaren showcase at the biennial Chinese motor show, which positions itself as the world’s largest automobile trade fair.

“McLaren has enjoyed three years of success in China and we are delighted to be premiering the new 720S at Auto Shanghai 2017 as we look forward to further growth in this market,” commented Mike Flewitt, CEO of McLaren Automotive, who will reveal McLaren’s new supercar to the Chinese market during a press conference at 1000 hrs on 19 April. “Customer interest in McLaren cars continues to increase rapidly and we are pleased to recognise this not only by introducing the second generation of McLaren’s Super Series product family, but also a 570GT Commemorative Edition for China.”

The new McLaren 720S makes it first appearance in China in Performance specification, finished for the first time in a striking combination of Saros exterior paint colour and Jet Black/Xenon Yellow leather interior with visible carbon fibre Monocage II structure. A carbon fibre roof panel, rear bumper and door sills further enhance the extreme sporting intent of McLaren’s second-generation Super Series, with bonnet inlets, mirror casings, rear fender air intakes and front splitter in the same material.

McLaren China will begin taking orders for the new McLaren 720S as Auto Shanghai commences, with the first customer cars arriving in July.

The 570GT Commemorative Edition has been created to mark three years of McLaren sales success in China. Luxurious and refined, with a side-opening rear glass hatch offering an additional 220 litres of storage on the leather-lined Touring Deck, the 570GT is the ideal starting point for a special celebration model; designed with a focus on day-to-day usability and long distance comfort, it also provides the scintillating performance expected of a McLaren.

Pacific Blue in colour – the original launch colour for the GT – the three identical Commemorative Edition cars feature a Jet Black and Areia (cream) luxury Nappa leather-trimmed By McLaren Design interior. The rear luggage area of the car is finished in the same material, and carpets are colour-matched in Areia. A Carbon Black leather steering wheel and Carbon Black seat belts contrast with the light leather and complement the Jet Black fascia and door trim, while additional features above the usual 570GT specification include Bowers & Wilkins 12 Speaker audio system, vehicle nose lift and a rear-view camera.

To further enhance the visual drama of the car, the rear bumper and wing, door skirt and front splitter and blade are carbon fibre components by McLaren Special Operations and the lightweight forged alloy wheels and exhausts are in Stealth finish.

In addition to the new 720S and the 570GT Commemorative Edition, the McLaren 570S will also be displayed on the McLaren stand, which is 8A25, in Hall 8.1. McLaren cars can be ordered in China through any of ten McLaren retailers, in Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Changsha, Tianjin, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Shenzhen, Shanghai and Shenyang.

About McLaren Automotive:

McLaren Automotive is a British manufacturer of luxury, high-performance sports and super cars, located at the McLaren Technology Centre (MTC) in Woking, Surrey. For the past 30 years, McLaren has pioneered the use of carbon fibre in vehicle production and since introducing a carbon chassis into racing and road cars with the 1981 McLaren MP4/1 and 1993 McLaren F1 respectively, McLaren has not built a car without a carbon fibre chassis.

Following the global launch of McLaren Automotive in 2010, the groundbreaking 12C was revealed in 2011, the 12C Spider in 2012, and the limited-run McLaren P1™ went into production in 2013. In keeping with its plan to introduce a new model each year, the company unveiled the 650S, in Coupé and Spider form in 2014, while 2015 proved to be a year of unprecedented growth of the product portfolio with five new models launched across the full range. The strictly limited edition 675LT Coupé premiered at the Geneva Motor Show alongside the track-only McLaren P1™ GTR which, with 1,000PS, became the most powerful model ever produced by the brand. The much-anticipated Sports Series became the third – and final – model tier in the McLaren range with the 570S Coupé and 540C Coupé debuting in New York and Shanghai respectively, less than one month apart. The end of 2015 saw the launch of the fifth model, the 675LT Spider, which was as a direct response to customer demand. The year also saw the end of production for the first model in the Ultimate Series as the 375th McLaren P1™ was completed, closing what had become a defining year for the British brand. 2016 continued where 2015 had left off with the introduction of the 570GT - a second bodystyle for the Sports Series and the most luxurious car McLaren has ever built, as well as the 570S GT4 and 570S Sprint track variants. 2016 also marked the introduction of the company’s new business plan, Track22, which sees the company investing £1B in Research and Development to deliver 15 all new cars or derivatives by the end of 2022, of which at least 50% will feature hybrid technology. The uplift in sales in 2016 also saw the launch of the second shift at the McLaren Production Centre as well as the company’s third year of profitability in just six years of trading. In March 2017, the second-generation Super Series was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show with the global premiere of the McLaren 720S.
